Tools for the Job: Takeaways from FINRA’s Annual Conference

Earlier this month, our team had a worthwhile experience tuning into FINRA’s 2024 Annual Conference. It was valuable to hear both regulatory and industry perspectives on some of the most pressing issues facing the markets today, from ongoing supervisory initiatives to the adoption of emerging technologies like AI.

The theme of this year’s event was “Navigating Change,” and the speakers rose to the occasion when it came to emphasizing this idea. One particularly compelling speaker was Stephanie Dumont, EVP, Market Regulation and Transparency Services at FINRA, who provided some interesting updates on the organization’s work to protect investors and promote market integrity.

One of Dumont’s statements that stood out was her acknowledgement of the challenges around monitoring traders’ use of social media, particularly with regard to short selling – the real-time, anonymous nature of these channels can make it very difficult to detect and adequately respond to manipulation. She did, however, cite some of FINRA’s efforts to combat these activities, including ongoing enhancements to its Cross-Market Supervision Report Cards.

This was gratifying to hear. Surveyor is aligned with FINRA’s stated priorities for promoting fairness and transparency: just like FINRA’s experience with social media, our clients and prospects are facing more challenges than ever when it comes to detecting and addressing manipulative trading activity across their organization. We are committed to enhancing our platform with intuitive experiences that enable users to understand transactions on a deeper level and take appropriate action when required. One of these features, our new Trends page, is highlighted later in this newsletter.

As a technology provider, we may not have the same regulatory mandate as FINRA, but we are proud to be on the same page in terms of what it will take to promote effective supervision of trading activity.

NYSE Women’s Golf Event 2024

On May 21, our President Lisa Balter Saacks hit the links for an enjoyable day of golf and networking at NYSE’s 2024 women’s golf event. It was a great day of meeting old and new friends while workshopping our swings. Lisa had the chance to play with an exceptional group of women who represent the next generation of women in capital markets. We even managed to have some compelling conversations on trade surveillance in the process!
