Navigating Small Firm Compliance: Perspectives from FINRA and STA Conferences

Our team has had a busy fall on the conference circuit! We attended STA’s 91st Annual Market Structure Conference in Orlando and the FINRA Small Firms Conference in Chicago. Both events provided valuable opportunities to hear from expert voices and connect in person with capital markets firms, regulators and fellow RegTechs. Through our continued active dialogues, we further deepened our understanding of the compliance hurdles firms face each day.

At the STA conference, discussions centered on the SEC’s active agenda. The recent wave of market structure reform – from the newly adopted tick size rule to the transition to T+1 settlement to new broker-dealer registration requirements – suggests higher stakes amid growing regulatory scrutiny, particularly for markets historically underserved from a trade surveillance perspective, like fixed income. All firms are grappling with the need to meet these compliance burdens while navigating significant operational challenges.

At the FINRA event, we learned more about the specific compliance challenges faced by small firms, many of which rely on inadequate trade surveillance manuals. In our conversations, we shared the benefits of a comprehensive trade surveillance program, anchored by a technology platform that increases efficiency and accuracy at scale. One point that resonated with many attendees was the value of Surveyor’s streamlined onboarding process. Our approach to data normalization, integration, and implementation enables our clients to get up and running quickly without overburdening their IT teams, all at a cost that accounts for the realities small firms face. We provide an alternative to both inadequate manual processes and costly implementations that take months to get off the ground.

Our overall takeaway from this events season: there has never been a bigger need for elegant trade surveillance solutions. Yes, we’re biased, but with compliance departments under more pressure than ever, they need every advantage – whether on accuracy, workflow efficiency or cost savings. With the right partner in place, these firms can make trade surveillance the least of their worries, so they can focus on other efforts toward building a culture of compliance and helping their firms adapt in today’s complex regulatory environment.

Crowdsource Corner

With regulators scrutinizing trading behavior like never before, satisfying trade surveillance requirements while maintaining efficiency at the firm level is no easy feat. This is especially true for fixed income surveillance. This trending asset class is highly fragmented and complex, requiring a higher level of sophistication to properly monitor.

We want to hear from you: What do you see as the biggest challenge in performing effective trade surveillance for fixed income markets?

  1. Market complexity and data fragmentation
  2. High cost of market data and infrastructure
  3. Evolving regulatory requirements
  4. Lack of subject matter expertise within teams
